as a counterpoint now that i've read the article: I rather appreciate read receipts when someone often doesn't look at their phone or that app/has trouble receiving messages for whatever reason

I miss a looooot of messages in wire when my phone is in power saving mode and folks just assume i saw them even though i need to restart the app to do so. And seeing that someone hasn't seen a message yet is it's own context (either comforting or not, but generally better than nothing).
