a Warm Take on cancel culture, feel free to discuss or boost

since i won't be making a blog post about it, here's my thoughts on cancel culture

  • democratized communication is a really good way to give a little bit more power to marginalized people, and metoo is a positive example of that

  • marginalized people, more than anyone else, are people who have been hurt, and some of us are likely to lash out when we find that we have power

  • "cancel culture" is a term that is basically meaningless in and of itself and is used mainly to homogenize and abstract several specific tactics people have lots of experience with

  • those tactics are neither uniformly bad nor uniformly good and include very traditional boycotts, targeted harassment, slander, and deplatforming

  • rather than trying to reckon with "cancel culture" as a phenomenon we should examine these individual tactics as applied to individual targets so we can draw on our experience and history
