Being an admin crushes the soul
Don't be an admin if you aren't already one
@Elizafox i was already missing a soul, so..
@twitter It then begins to crush the intellect.
@Elizafox i can't argue that one..
@Elizafox I couldn't agree more, I was a Unix/Linux admin for 2 years that felt like 20
@Elizafox If I ever go back to hosting an instance of a federated platform, it will probably be for my personal website, with myself as the only registered user.
Then again, I sure don't miss the monthly hosting bills.
The idealist in me also regularly whispers in my ear about how cool it would be to host some kind of hub for a specific group, locale, or cause... 😜
@deadsuperhero @Elizafox Could you elaborate further? I'm interested in the problems you encountered.
@erictapen @deadsuperhero I encountered someone posting darkweb CP stuff from my instance, dealing with other admins can sometimes be exhausting, dealing with drama, and you get lots of followers so that increases the drama factor by virtue of visibility and it's just kinda meh.
@deadsuperhero @erictapen I've only had to suspend people a few times but on bigger instances it can be weekly or even daily.
@Elizafox @deadsuperhero These stories of you two sound exhausting. Thanks for sharing.
I'm looking forward to self host (asap I'm in the position to run services reliably enough) and I'd like to allow some friends on it. But I could'nt imagine running a public instance somewhat for the reasons you just explained.
Some of it boils down to community management, especially regarding establishing a code of conduct and enforcing it.
Other bits involve potential legal issues, depending on where you host and what things your users post to the web. As Eliza just pointed out, CP is a huge issue. In my own experience, Diaspora went through a phase where ISIS sympathisers tried to sign up on public instances.
@Elizafox @erictapen For those reasons and more, I generally advise people to self-host. But not everyone can afford to do that, sadly.
@Elizafox seconded, was sysadmin, died of boredom.
