I am a Python/C/C++ programmer.
I hate Perl, but not the people who write it. I don't hate the player, I hate the game.
I am glad Perl is a dying language. Saying it isn't doesn't make it so. People still use COBOL and no one would argue it's not dying.
I love how many Perl programmers hate on Ruby because it stole their niche, not for really any technical reasons.
No, I'm not a big fan of Ruby either. Fuck needing special versions of everything to get the most trivial things working.
Also I love the Perl programmers who hate Ruby despite never using it. I've used Perl and Ruby. I have my reasons for hating both. I don't want to cover them because frankly everyone else has to death.
Never say you hate a language even though you've never tried it. That's the most petty, immature pap ever.
It's simply hating it because everyone in your circles does. 100% bullshit.
If you hate a language after trying it, that's your opinion. It's certainly not perfect (nothing is). But don't hate it just because everyone else in your community does.
Also remember: it's okay to have preferences! I do. I'm biased. You're biased. All programmers are biased. That doesn't make them bad people.
Programming is something that naturally attracts bias, whether it be for functional or aesthetic concerns.
But if you hate something despite never trying it, or at least giving it a good lookover and deciding "I'm not going to like that," you're being "Tom Petty" on the pettiness scale (which I totally pulled from my ass just now).
And don't forget: always be excellent to each other.
@Elizafox we were lied to by our album covers!
@Elizafox As something of a corollary, never season my cooking without trying at least one bite. Try it and season away if you must. Don't try it and I will SHANK an eater!
Also I sell stocks for a reason now. Just noting.
