Cars are an excellent source of mobility in rural areas and medium-distance travel. A LOT of people can't handle the sensory overload of public transit, and there is a FUCKTON of it.
Cars do NOT have to pollute the environment. We can make them out of renewable materials. We can charge them with renewable energy. There is no reason we can't have both cars and transit. None.
Besides, roads don't close for leaves on the line.

@Elizafox never thought about the sensory overload problem, that shit is real. Overcrowding too.
@Elizafox there are plenty of critiques of how car priority negatively shapes urban design, but I can't really recall any that take disability and other intersectional issues seriously into account :(
Besides that, transit can often be very hostile to the disabled, especially those who can't stand for long periods. I speak as someone whose leg got fucked up in a car wreck and standing for long periods of time is very uncomfortable for me.
