@Elizafox
"Let's take out the train and replace it with... something functionally equivalent and far more expensive than trains."

@frostotron @Elizafox

yet over here some towns/cities/regions *reintroduced* trams (streetcars) 30-40 years after they were removed.

Also we've had a semi-autonomous metro railway in East London for 30+ years (Docklands Light Railway)

OK the whole of London is only about 30km from one end to the other (in any direction), but there are a *lot* of people who need transport crammed into this small area, and its easier to live without a car there than elsewhere in England..

@vfrmedia
@Elizafox
They don't want streetcars, they want to replace subway trains with automated cars in the same tunnels.

@frostotron @Elizafox

whoever thinks doing that is a good idea clearly has no clue how metro systems actually run (and its not that bloody expensive to refurbish the rolling stock, and that automated operation is already a thing (it has been in some areas of London since 50 years, the driver is just there for safety reasons)

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automati

@Elizafox It is horrid. Even autonomous cars wouldn't be more efficient at moving people from one location to another. But especially in the US there is a decades long history of public transport being deliberately run down.

@bob There is one place for cars: thinly populated rural areas outside towns. Carpooling makes more sense; mass transit requires, well, a mass to be efficient. But that's about it.

@Elizafox I'd maybe be OK with autonomous taxi-buses that continuously brute-force the Traveling Salesman Problem to optimize pickup and delivery of passengers from and to arbitrary destinations... but I'd still want a backbone transit option involving rails.

@Elizafox I used to think only NYTimes shitposted professionally, but I guess The Atlantic went for it
